Rahn Hortman: The Witty Comedian with a Laid-Back Style

Rahn’s versatility shines through his performances on various stages, from churches and colleges to clubs and corporate events. Recently, he embarked on his second national tour alongside Anjelah Johnson in her “Who Do I Think I Am” tour. Rahn also made television appearances on the Circle Network and JFL TV, and he was a semi-finalist in the ABFF Comedy Wings competition (HBO).

His festival appearances include LaughFest (Grand Rapids), the South Beach Comedy Festival (Miami), the Bay Area Black Comedy Festival (Oakland), and the Ashville Comedy Festival (Ashville). Regularly featured on Sirius XM radio, Rahn taped his first special, “Good Game,” for DryBar Comedy. In 2019, he earned the title of “Best Stand-Up Comedian” from Creative Loafing.

Notably, Rahn secured third place out of hundreds of entries in the Jeanne Lawrence Comedy Competition. His television credits extend to Nickelodeon’s “Nick Mom Nite Out,” Comedy Time TV, The TBN Network, and Mav TV. Currently, he’s filming the pilot episode of the sitcom “Advisors.”

Beyond comedy, Rahn wears another hat—he is the President and Founder of the Healing With Humor Foundation Inc., a 501©(3) nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about Sickle Cell Anemia. This mission holds personal significance for Rahn, as he has two children affected by the disease.

Humble Beginnings of Rahn Hortman

Rahn Hortman never thought that one day seasoned veterans of comedy would give him personal praise for his stage show being “refreshing” and “a departure from the norm.” However, fittingly, nothing about Rahn’s journey to the world of stand-up comedy has been normal.

Born on September 27th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Rahn credits his 5th-grade teacher as the first to nurture his natural urge to entertain. Impressed by Rahn’s good grades but frustrated by his penchant for distracting classmates with his jokes, the comedian-in-training was granted the last fifteen minutes of class to do “his show” as long as he composed himself during the first forty-five! “From there, I was hooked,” he says wistfully.

Influences

Rahn credits his earliest influences to Bill Cosby and Martin Lawrence. Bill Cosby’s ability to tackle diverse subject matter without uttering a single curse word, combined with Martin Lawrence’s natural gift of representing the “ordinary guy,” formed the foundation for Rahn’s vision. Consequently, what resulted is a unique blend of profanity-free banter with pointed observations about everyday people that leave no one safe.

Milwaukee to Florida and Family

After relocating from Milwaukee to Tampa, Florida, Rahn Hortman became a crowd favorite at comedy hotspots like The Improv and Sidesplitters. He won the W-MOR TV Channel 32 Comedy Challenge and finished first out of seven finalists in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Jokers Wild Contest.

Rahn’s reputation for clean material has allowed him to perform at church functions, private engagements, and corporate events. Offstage, Rahn spends time with his wife, Tynise, and their four children: Rahn Jr., Ryan, Raylon, and Rionna. They all joke that the next child should be sponsored by the letter “S”!

Giving Back

On a serious note, two of Rahn’s children suffer from sickle-cell anemia. Rahn uses his comedy to educate people about the disease and hopes to become its National Spokesperson, while also running his own non-profit organization in support of those who currently are battling with sickle-cell anemia.
