Company Holiday Party Planning – Reward Your Employees

Are thinking about planning a company Holiday Party? As we approach the holiday season, usually awash with holiday parties, it got me thinking about how employees are rewarded. One of the chief reasons for hosting a company holiday party is to reward employees for their hard work. There may be financial reasons as well (check out this article for how to measure holiday party ROI, which might come in handy to help convince your boss to do something if the annual party is on the chopping block this year).

Why Company Holiday Party Planning?

A company holiday party does something else too. It creates a space for employees and management to come together not as workers, but as friends. It provides an opportunity for people to come together and enjoy the company of the people you work with without worrying about the bottom line, which is something that might not happen much throughout the year.

Sure there may be financial benefits (see the article linked above), but this is primarily achieved by creating a little bit of goodwill that goes a long way. It lets your employees know that you value them and their work. So when I see that companies are deciding against doing a party due to the economy I worry about the message that this sends to  employees, many of whom probably look forward to and expect some sort of year end celebration. When times are tough, which undoubtedly is the case in many industries, it’s especially important to show employees you care.

If you normally do a lavish celebration, of course it’s understandable that you’d cut back a little bit, but don’t do away with the party altogether. Do it smaller, simpler and smarter. You can change the scale without ruining the event. If you normally hire a celebrity comedian , for example, consider using top caliber clean comedians or regional comics.

If you normally do an extravagant meal, do a buffet, or even a potluck. My point is do something. If you can afford to use holiday party entertainment, I’d definitely recommend it. Using a corporate comedian is a great way to get people’s minds off the economy for 45-60 minutes and it gives your guests a common experience to talk (and joke) about for months to come and leaves everyone feeling a little better (just in time for the holidays).
